National party status for Aam Aadmi Party: NCP, AITC, CPI status withdrawn
The Election Commission of India (ECI) Monday granted national party status to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and withdraws the national party status of major parties including Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), and Communist Party of India (CPI).
Responding to ECI’s decision, AAP supremo and Delhi Chief Minister tweeted, “National party in such a short time? This is nothing less than a miracle. Many congratulations to all... Crores of people of the country have taken us here. People expect a lot from us. Today people have given us this huge responsibility... Lord, bless us to fulfill this responsibility well.”
The ECI had issued show-cause notices to the three parties in July 2019, asking them to explain why their national party status should not be revoked, after their performance in the Lok Sabha elections that year.
